1872 Ansicht von Chicago vor dem Brande

This scarce genuine hand-colored antique map is at first glance an almost idyllic view of Chicago as seen from a point to the east of what is now Navy Pier. Lake Michigan with myriad vessels including steamships and schooners and frigates, fills the foreground. Closer inspection reveals the portions of the city destroyed by the fire in 1871, which are in grey. Vessels of every kind ply the rivers through the city, and the blue of the rivers as they loop through the neighborhoods stands in vivid contrast to the desolation of the grey burnt-out neighborhoods.
The map is from a German publication and all text and descriptions are in German. German text on verso. The key (also in German) at the bottom identifies 49 points of interest. This map is a must-have for lovers of Chicago.
Condition: This print is in A condition, approaching museum quality.
