This is a scarce sea chart of the Atlantic Ocean and the shores of some of the lands which border it. This complex chart was drawn under the direction of the Royal English Astronomer, geophysicist, and geographer, Edmond Halley, and engraved by John Senex, a prominent 18th century publisher of maps, atlases and globes.

This remarkable chart resulted from Halley’s observations at the time he commanded the ‘Paramore’, between 1698 and 1701, taking sights and readings, and making surveys in the North and South Atlantic Ocean. The map is remarkably detailed and provided seafarers with a wealth of information regarding the waters upon which their voyages took them. It includes and names all major harbors, islands, banks and shoals, and was designed for ships crossing the Atlantic from Europe and Africa to North and South America and the Caribbean. The areas indicating shoals are of especial importance, as they are in direct line with many of the sea routes of the day, and close to areas which were frequent destinations. Three compass roses grace the chart, with rhumb lines to guide navigators radiating from each.

Though his contributions to science and mapmaking are of significant import, Halley is best known for being the first to observe the comet which bears his name, in 1682.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition, with toning of the edges and foxing in places. Beautifully hand colored.
