By: John Speed

Date: 1676 (Published) London

Dimensions: 15.5 x 20.5 inches (39.4 x 52.1 cm)

Issued in 1676 by Roger Rea, this ‘New and Accurat Map of the World’ is one of the earliest obtainable world maps to be published in England, and in English.

This map first appeared in the 1627 edition of Speed’s world atlas, but the extent to which the map can be attributed to Speed himself is questionable, for it carries no attribution and may have been prepared by George Humble, the publisher, whose imprint appeared on that map. One of the maps sourced for Speed’s map is the rare map by William Grent, published approximately a year earlier.

Speed’s map was frequently reprinted as part of an atlas with accompanying text in English on the verso. However, subsequent editions were not as numerous as those of other atlases published in multiple languages such as Mercator-Hondius, Jansson or Blaeu, thus this map has become increasingly rare and has long been considered a desirable collector’s item.

This example of the map is the exceedingly rare state 3 Rea brothers addition, owing its rarity to the loss of the impressions in the great Fire of London. Just below the allegorical figure of Aire along the lower right bottom of the map are the words ‘Are to be sold by Roger Rea the Elder and Younger at the Golden Crosse in Cornhill at the Aga.t ye Exchange?’, which are partially obscured by modern color, but observable when specifically sought.

With superb embellishments and fine engraving, this map was produced at the height of the Golden Age of Cartography.

Condition: This map is in A+ condition. Modern color on an extremely fine impression with beautiful modern coloring.
