By: Gerard de Jode

Date: 1593 (published) Antwerp

Dimensions: 14.5 x 19.75 inches (36.8 x 50.2 cm)

A Superb example of Gerard de Jode’s highly scarce map of Scandinavia.

This magnificent uncolored map by Gerard de Jode maps Scandinavia, the Baltic and Gulf of Finland, and extends from Iceland and the Coast of Scotland to Novograd, St. Petersburg and the Norwegian Sea. The map is richly engraved by Joannes and Lucas van Deutecum, perhaps the most famous of all Dutch engravers of the period and is richly embellished with a wide variety of seagoing vessels and sea monsters. Text in Latin on the verso.

In comparison with the works of some other cartographers, Gerard de Jode’s maps are quite scarce. Despite de Jode’s acumen and his considerable skills, the primary work which might have made his work more ascendant, Speculum Orbis Terrarum, was published a few years too late to compete well with the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius. Due to the failure of his atlas, which technically excelled that or Ortelius, only twelve known copies survive. Thus, the scarcity of his maps.

Condition: This map is in A condition, a fine dark impression.
