This highly detailed, fascinating map is the earliest obtainable map of Yellowstone National Park. Created within a short time of the official designation of the area as a National Park, the map reveals surprising depth and breadth of knowledge and familiarity with the area.
Many of the Park’s countless thermal features such as geysers, hot springs, mud pots and are included in this early map, as are its mountains and valleys, its mighty rivers and the canyons through which they flow. Headwaters and forks of rivers are denoted, the continental divided is in place, and perhaps most interesting, the map renders highly visible the outlines of the volcano’s features, suggesting the size of the mighty caldera just under the surface.
The park spans an area of 3,468 square miles; a broad territory including lakes, canyons, rivers, mountains and myriad fantastical thermal features. One of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America, Yellowstone Lake is centered directly over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest super-volcano on the continent. The caldera is classified as an active volcano, and has erupted with tremendous force countless times in the last two million years.
